What is GIST Scholarship 2027? Why is it Fully Funded Automatically?

Many students search for "GIST Scholarship" thinking it is an external scholarship. It is NOT.

According to GIST's official international admissions FAQ, international graduate students are granted the GIST scholarship without a separate scholarship application process.

This means:

1.    You apply for ADMISSION to GIST graduate school

2.    If you are admitted as an international student, you automatically receive the financial support package

3.    You don't need to fill a separate scholarship form

This is a huge advantage. You focus on building a strong research-based admission application, not on hunting for funding.

GIST is a science and technology-focused university in Gwangju, South Korea. It is ranked among the top research universities in Asia, famous for its low student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, advanced labs, and intensive research environment.

GIST Scholarship Benefits 2027 - 9 Powerful Benefits Explained

This is why GIST is called a Fully Funded Scholarship in South Korea.

Benefit 1: Full Tuition Fee Waiver
Full tuition support of KRW 3,607,000 per semester. According to GIST's 2026 information, required academic fees valued at approximately KRW 7.61 million per year are fully waived. This alone saves you $5,500+ per year.

Benefit 2: Monthly Student Allowance

·         MS Students: KRW 140,000 per month

·         PhD Students: KRW 295,000 per month
Condition: Must complete at least 9 credits in previous semester.

Benefit 3: Monthly Meal Allowance
Nearly KRW 100,000 per month as meal allowance. Same condition of 9 credits.

Benefit 4: International Student Allowance
Extra KRW 120,000 per month for international students with GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.5 in previous semester.

Benefit 5: Huge Research Assistantship / Research Incentives
This is where GIST is different from other Korean universities. For students participating in research projects:

·         Average annual research incentive was approximately KRW 11.03 million for master’s students and KRW 17.48 million for doctoral students based on 2025 data reported by university. Some departments report even higher: KRW 6.4 million/year for MS and KRW 13.74 million/year for PhD as average RA stipend.

·         This amount varies by lab, professor and project. Top AI and Semiconductor labs pay much more.

Benefit 6: Health Insurance Support
GIST supports 60% of National Health Insurance for international students plus an annual medical checkup.

Benefit 7: One-Way Flight Reimbursement
Reimbursement for a one-way flight to Korea for incoming international students (first-time use only). This reduces your initial relocation cost.

Benefit 8: Graduate Housing
GIST provides graduate dormitory accommodation and apartments for married students. Note: Housing is NOT free - you pay dorm fees and utilities separately, and there can be waiting times. But access is guaranteed for international students.

Benefit 9: World-Class Research Facilities
Access to advanced testing and analytical facilities, international research opportunities, overseas collaborative research support.

Important Cost to Remember: There is a one-time matriculation fee of KRW 680,000 for newly admitted students. Some students may qualify for a waiver.

Why GIST is Better Than Other Korean Scholarships?

Compared to GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) which requires embassy track, GIST is direct university admission with automatic funding. No Korean language requirement, all courses taught in English, and research stipend is much higher than GKS monthly allowance.

For science, engineering, AI, semiconductor students, GIST offers better labs than Seoul National University for graduate research.
