What Does Chevening Fully Funded
Actually Cover?
Chevening is NOT a partial
discount. It is 100% fully funded. The package covers:
1.
Full University Tuition Fees: Whatever your UK university charges -
£15,000 to £35,000 - fully paid.
2.
Monthly Living Stipend: A monthly living allowance to cover accommodation and living
expenses. Rate depends on whether you live inside or outside London.
3.
Travel Costs: Return flights from your home country to the UK.
4.
Arrival Allowance: Extra allowance when you arrive.
5.
Departure Allowance: Allowance to leave UK.
6.
Visa Cost: Cost of one UK student visa application.
7.
Travel Grant: Grant to attend Chevening events in the UK - exclusive
networking with 60,000+ Chevening alumni worldwide.
Chevening has been awarded
to more than 60,000 professionals from over 160 countries since 1983, with
roughly 1,800 scholarships granted each year. It is one of the most competitive
scholarships in the world.
For South Asia
specifically: The UK government describes Chevening in India as the largest in
the world, having supported 4,000 awardees since 1983. Pakistan, India,
Nigeria, and Bangladesh are major Chevening countries.
Who Can Apply? Complete
Eligibility Checklist 2026
You must meet ALL these
conditions:
1.
Citizenship: Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nepal, Sri Lanka,
Philippines, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, etc. - 160+ countries eligible. Check
your country page on chevening.org.
2.
Undergraduate Degree: Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for entry to a
UK master's programme. For current cycle, your undergraduate studies must have
been completed at least two years before the application
deadline. If you completed your undergraduate degree after
October 2024, you are NOT eligible this cycle. You need degree certificate by
interview stage.
3.
Work Experience - 2,800 Hours: This is where most people fail. You need at
least 2,800 hours of qualifying work experience
gained AFTER completing your undergraduate degree. This is
roughly equivalent to two years of full-time work on 35-hour week.
What
Counts as Work Experience?
·
Full-time employment
·
Part-time employment
·
Voluntary work
·
Paid or unpaid internships
You may submit up to fifteen separate employment periods
to reach total.
What
DOES NOT Count:
·
Work that was a mandatory part of your university course -
compulsory internships, required clinical placements, course-embedded
practicums are all OUT.
·
Work done BEFORE graduation does not count.
How
Hours Are Calculated: Hours = Weeks worked x Hours per week. Working week is treated
as 35 to 60 hours and working year as 40 to 50 weeks. If you enter above 60
hours/week, system flags it as ineligible. Don't inflate hours.
If
you reached 2,800 hours in less than 2 years, you are still eligible. Hours are the test, not
calendar.
4.
Apply to 3 UK Courses: You must apply to three
different eligible UK master’s courses and must have received
an unconditional offer from at least one of them by 8 July
2027. This is the SECOND deadline nobody headlines.
Chevening application
deadline is 6 Oct 2026. But university unconditional offer deadline is 8 July
2027. If you don't secure offer by then, you lose scholarship even if you are
selected.
5.
Return Home: Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years
after scholarship ends.
Who
is NOT Eligible:
·
Hold British or dual British citizenship (exceptions: British
Overseas Territories, BN(O) holders from Hong Kong)
·
Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening-eligible country
·
Previously studied in UK on UK government-funded scholarship
·
Chevening alumni cannot apply for second Chevening Scholarship
Chevening itself does NOT
require English-language test, but UK universities you apply to almost
certainly will (IELTS 6.5-7.0).

5: The 4 Chevening Essays - Most Important Part
Chevening assesses 4
areas:
1.
Leadership and Influencing (500
words): Give real example of leading and influencing change. Don't just
say "I am a leader" - show it with STAR method.
2.
Networking and Relationship Building
(500 words): How you build networks and use them to create impact.
3.
Choice of UK Course (500 words): Why you chose these 3
courses? How they link to your career? Why UK?
4.
Career Plan and Future Impact (500
words): Clear career plan showing how UK degree will help you make
positive impact in home country after return. This carries most weight. Vague
"I will contribute to my country's development" is most common
failure.
Step
6: Submit Before 6 Oct 11:00 UTC
Don't wait last day. Heavy traffic causes technical issues. Portal becomes
inaccessible after that moment.
How to Win Chevening - 5 Secrets
From Alumni
1.
Focus on Impact After Return: The UK FCDO Head of Scholarships says they
look for people ready to work with UK on building more resilient and
sustainable future. Your "career plan" essay must show concrete plan
for next 5-10 years in home country.
2.
Course Selection Strategy: Choose 3 courses at different universities
but related to each other. Don't choose MBA at Oxford, MA Dance at Leeds, and
MSc Agriculture at Edinburgh - shows no focus. Choose 3 similar courses that
support your career path.
3.
Work Experience Presentation: Calculate hours correctly. Use formula: Weeks
x Hours/week. Include voluntary work and unpaid internships if after
graduation. Don't include course mandatory internship.
4.
Start University Applications Early: Chevening guidance is
blunt: apply to university courses as soon as possible AFTER submitting
Chevening application. People who wait to hear from Chevening before applying
to universities are in wrong order.
5.
Leadership Examples from Pakistan/India: Don't need to be CEO.
Leading a community project, organizing university event with 100 people,
leading volunteer team, managing small team at work - all count if you show
influence and positive change.
Which Courses Are Eligible?
All full-time taught
master's degrees (MA, MSc, MBA, LLM) at any UK university are eligible, except:

Distance learning
·
Part-time
·
Less than 9 months
·
More than 12 months
·
